Farming today

This is a moor sheep farm, typical of the North Yorkshire Moors landscape with small fields enclosed by dry stone walls. It is surrounded by heather moorland and is situated on a south facing slope above Commondale Beck.

The farm carries a flock of black face moor sheep and grazing for our fold of highland cattle. We also have chickens which are totally free range - they will wander into the cottages if you let them - and love to be fed with stale bread crumbs or corn. Since they lay everywhere, we get a few eggs to eat and a lot of chicks hatching out.

Most of the 86 acres of land is hay meadow and pasture, with a wide variety of plant species. Some of the land, because of the steepness of the slope has never been ploughed in the last 70 years that we know of so some of the grass species are very old. We are involved with a Countryside Stewardship Scheme, which helps to preserve the land in a natural state by not using any chemicals to kill weeds or fertilizer to increase the quantity of grass grown. The livestock eat grass all summer and in winter they are fed on hay or silage which is dried grass which is usually cut in June on fine, sunny days.

The farm has also entered into a Farm Woodland Management Scheme to manage the existing woodland which has been extended by planting 550 oak trees in the year 2000. Other woodland species include birch, holly and alder. This woodland has wheelchair accessible footpaths and picnic sites on grassy open spaces. Lots of visitors enjoy having picnics in the woods and just listening to the silence, broken only by the bird song.

The future of farming and the countryside is changing and we have to adapt. Future proposals for Fowl Green Farm include selling farm gate fresh produce, including our own beef, which is superb.
